Critical Investigation: Project proposal

Angle

How will you approach this question? Is this simply a moral panic of the 21st century or is further regulation required?
I’m going to approach this question form the angle of why does the impact of masculinity have on young men which and how this is changing the way the younger audience think and this could be considered as a moral panic as because this impact can lead to other problems.

Hypothesis

what is your current opinion or viewpoint on the media debate? That is: what will you be testing through your research and investigation? E.g.: Video games are psychologically damaging for young people, and audiences have become increasingly desensitised to screen violence. In my opinion I find that this is a major factor psychologically which means that it could lead the audiences to obtain some forms of disorders.

Linked production piece

what are you planning to make as your linked production piece? E.g.: News night-style documentary video report looking at the impact of violent videogames on young people. For my linked production I was thinking of going with either a front page of a magazine or on other hand also feel like a linked documentary on this case would be a better choice out of the two.

Apply the Key Concepts to your text/topic by using the questions from the
Summer Research Project to help you. (Include at least five bullet points per key concept). Include as many media keywords as you can.
·         Representation: within the whole case study I will be referring to the idea of what happens to the perception of audiences who watch action thrillers such as Pain and Gain may have a hard time after towards the way they are going to be thinking do I have to look like that or will I not be accepted within my peer groups.
·         Furthermore, the genre is mainly based on being and action thriller and crime fiction which is where you see the most masculinism therefore these will be the main aspects that will be focusing; however I will be comparing both between a non-stereotypical film such as wonder women which diverts from these stereotypes; that’s evident because their main was to show that women are just as strong as men; this suggest that the directors which are also female directors which overall shows that female deserve exactly the same amount of respect as males directors.
·         On the other hand we can also look at the type of institution because evidently the institution of film was Paramount and directed by Michele Bay; this director is known for making the Transformers sequel which also suggest that action and thriller which Is linked to my summer project because he also directed Bad Boys which is a crime fiction thriller that can also be linked to my question.

SHEP
·         Social: overall this could be harm to society and also may be a moral panic if this is taken to the extreme
·         Historical: The changing perception of masculinity hasent changed as much and overall it can be traced back to a specific time period such as 1970s when pumping iron was created, therefore it can be traced back to cultures with different standards therefore it shows that masculinity is a common and widely concerning factor now I believe that it is just more easier to find out about these bodybuilder through social media which means that maybe it’s just that we are now more evolved possibly.
·         Economic: because of Mobile communication it has now become easier to upload an image and gain likes and shares than ever before meaning that more and more consumers of the media that are male may possibly gain the idea that they “aren’t big enough” or not the correct image like others and then leads them to felling as if they do not receive any attention and that then leads them to changing their image constantly.
·         Political:

Apply the Wider Contexts to your text/topic, including at least three bullet points on each one.

Issues/Debates

Select at least five and say how each relates to your study, using the
Media A-Z to help you think about this. Your research and essay plan will need to factor these issues and debates into your work:

·                     Representation and stereotyping: Overall this does relate to my case study because the main research in the summer was on representation which shows that there are going to be a range of different types of representation but I’m focusing on the masculinism side of this as these consumers tend to be like the ones within the film and is evident on social media.  And overall now in I’m my opinion it’s becoming a problem because younger generations are become influenced by this as well now.
·                     Media effects: Overall because television reinforces the values that already present this supports the idea of representation because if the audience carry on being on the TV for Long amount of hours they are going to grow within into the same bracket of the question because these individuals are now watching TV and as they grow up they are going to carry on following each phase until they reach the last phase and then it’s going to be too late therefore it shows that the TV is moulding the way we watch TV and overall it brings me back to the question of “Masculinity & the impact of representations on young men” because its having an evident effect on them.
·                     Reality TV
·                     News Values
·                     Moral Panics: Firstly, because this has an evident effect on the media an also because its apart of a mass audience which means that they are having major impact on the mass audience.
·                     Post 9/11 and the media
·                     Ownership and control: Recent trends in media ownership and control suggest that the number of companies controlling global mass media has significantly shrunk in recent years. However because of social media which has allowed this mass audience that was an underground generation to become viral over social media.
·                     Regulation and censorship
·                     Media technology and the digital revolution – changing technologies in the 21st century, overall i believe that because of change in the technology it has lead the consumers who enjoy fitness and have a drive for fitness are more likely to post their clips to YouTube and Instagram and this has lead them to be seen all around the world; also at the same time make this extreme more noticed.
·                     The effect of globalisation on the media

Theories

Select at least five and say how each relates to your study, using keywords/specific theorists' names from the
Media A-Z:

·                     Semiotics: in my case study and text you are given a range of sings which overall allow the ready to and codes these are learned  and are then used to link signs to their meanings such as criminal who came out jail will have a denotation that this . The term is used in various ways in media and these semiotics go hand in hand with my case study. In communication these studies, are often a message and is described as being "encoded" from the sender and then "decoded" by the receiver.
·                     Structuralism and post-structuralism
·                     Postmodernism and its critiques
·                     Gender and ethnicity:  Almy et al. (1984) argue that media representations of gender are important because they enter the collective social conscience and reinforce culturally dominant (hegemonic) ideas about gender which represent males as dominant and females as subordinate.
·                     Marxism and hegemony: In Marxist philosophy, cultural hegemony is the domination of a culturally diverse society by the ruling class who manipulate the culture of that society therefore the dominate males within our society who manipulate both the market and also the audience perspective.
·                     Liberal Pluralism
·                     Colonialism and Post-colonialism
·                     Audience theories: some of the main effects are users and gratifications; these ultimately give its audience a sense of escapism therefore when the audience get a shot of James bond or Dwayne Jonson topless showing their manly hood; furthermore because of this does it suggest that their audience do want to see this and also want to gain this pleasure.
furthermore,  other effect include the suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver which suggests that we have been morally injected to want to be like this and has overall lead to masculism to become much more popular in action thrillers.
·                     Genre theories: Genre Theory Daniel Chandler: Conventional definitions  of genres tend to be based on the notion that they constitute particular conventions of content (such as themes or settings) and/or form (including structure and style) which are shared by the texts which are regarded as belonging to them. Therefore Genre has its own typical conventions that you tend to see depending on the type of genre it is therefore for mine it is a Action Thriller which is where you tend to see the most representation of masculinity; these stereotypes are exaggerated slightly, in the media which overall leads to the consumers to feel belittled.
